When Everything Is Krishna, Why Do We Worry?
In the previous verse, Lord Krishna introduced His higher and lower energies. He explained how this entire universe originates from His two-fold nature. However, today's verse—the seventh verse of the seventh chapter—unveils a much deeper truth. Often in our lives, we feel incredibly lonely. We feel that our pain, our anxieties, our office struggles, or our relationship failures are ours alone and that no one truly understands. We feel that this world is a chaotic place where everything is happening randomly.
We wake up, check our social media, see everyone appearing happy in their lives, and suddenly, a sense of inadequacy creeps in. 'Why is this happening only to me?' This question haunts our minds repeatedly. Be it a deadline at work, the pain of a breakup, or financial stress—in the midst of all this, we forget: Are we truly alone? Is all of this just a series of coincidences?
People often think that God is sitting somewhere in the seventh heaven, watching our struggles from afar. This is a massive misconception. People think spirituality means leaving the world behind. But Krishna is saying something completely different here. He is saying that no part of this world, not a single atom, is separate from Him.
Imagine a necklace. A thread runs through the entire necklace, holding the pearls together. The pearls look different and separate, but the thread is one. Krishna says that the office chair you sit on, the laptop you work on, the people you are surrounded by—all of them are threaded in Him. When you realize this, fear dissolves.
This verse has the power to erase every fear regarding your existence. It tells you that you are a part of that great eternal truth that never perishes. If you are stuck in a problem today, just remember the truth that you are in the embrace of that Supreme Being.
Often, we look for happiness outside, while it exists both within and all around us. We look for loyalty in relationships, but Krishna says that the ultimate source of loyalty is He Himself. Let us, through this verse, feel that thread that connects you and every moment of your life to Krishna.
मत्तः परतरं नान्यत्किञ्चिदस्ति धनञ्जय । मयि सर्वमिदं प्रोतं सूत्रे मणिगणा इव ॥ ७.७ ॥
Simple Meaning: What Krishna Says
Mattaḥ — than Me; parataraṃ — superior/other; na — not; anyat — anything else; kiñcit — even a little; asti — is; dhanañjaya — O conqueror of wealth (Arjuna); mayi — in Me; sarvam — everything; idam — this; protam — threaded; sūtre — on a thread; maṇi-gaṇāḥ — pearls; iva — like.
Krishna addresses Arjuna as 'Dhananjaya', which means one who has conquered wealth. He is reminding Arjuna that while you have conquered worldly wealth, now is the time for spiritual wealth. He says, O Arjuna, there is nothing higher than Me or separate from Me in this entire world.
Just as pearls are threaded on a string, so is this entire creation—the planets, the stars, the people, the emotions—all are threaded within Me. This means that the foundation of everything happening in this world is Krishna.
Insights from the Great Acharyas
Swami Ramsukhdas Ji: Swami ji emphasizes 'mattaḥ parataraṃ nānyat'. He says that we look for different things, but if we catch hold of the 'basis', we get everything. He explains that 'sūtre maṇigaṇā iva' means the thread is invisible; only the pearls are visible. Similarly, in the world, we see people and objects, but Krishna (the thread) holds everyone together, remaining invisible.
A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada: Prabhupada interprets this through the lens of devotion. He says that just as a necklace would fall apart without the thread, the universe would have no existence without Krishna. He teaches us that we should see Krishna in everything. When we understand this, we do not remain attached to material things but remember Krishna through those very objects.
Swami Mukundananda Ji: Swami Mukundananda uses a beautiful modern analogy. He says that just as the internet is an invisible thread connecting every computer in the world, Krishna is that thread of 'super-consciousness'. He teaches youth that when you feel anxious at work or college, remember that you are part of a larger system run by God.
Real-life Scenarios
Imagine you are about to give a big presentation at work. You are feeling nervous, your hands are shaking. Remember this verse. 'Mayi sarvamidam protam'—this presentation, these people, this fear—everything is threaded in Krishna. Fear arises when we think it is 'my' work. When we think of it as service to Krishna, the burden lightens. While meditating, when the mind wanders, bring it back and realize that the mind is also an expansion of Krishna. This thought calms the mind.
Your Questions, Krishna's Perspective
Is this my own special problem? Swami Ramsukhdas ji says your problem might feel big to you, but in Krishna's thread, everything is balanced. Leave the worry; He will handle it.
When will progress happen? Prabhupada believes progress is in 'Krishna Consciousness', not in material achievements. When you do everything for Krishna, progress becomes evident.
Is it necessary to stop every thought? Swami Mukundananda teaches that instead of stopping thoughts, fix them on Krishna. That is the easiest way.
